Making Art with Communities

Madison Mask’s art fosters an interactive conversation with the people of Dallas.

We are excited to launch a new installation with local Dallas artist Madison Mask that asks our members and guests the question, what does good work mean to you? In order to mark the unveil of this collaboration, we asked him a few questions so our community could get to know him better.

If someone asked you to describe your genre of art, what would you say?
I'd definitely say installation art. It's a unique genre that's hard to define or label - that's part of why I like it. It's constantly changing and you can really make it your own.

If there's one thing all installations share, it's the emphasis on the viewer's experience - putting the viewer in the driver's seat. With this Good Coworking post-it note installation, you're not just deciding what the definition of "good work" is - you're writing in your own handwriting, you're choosing a particular post-it note (and color), and you're placing it wherever you think is best. It's really up to you how you navigate the experience - making you an artist in the process. That kind of experiential focus is unique to the installation art genre.

Before starting your interactive art projects, have you previously had an outlet for your creativity, and if so, what was it?

I didn't have much of an art background prior to pursuing installation art. I tried drawing, film, music, etc, and none of it clicked for me.

I think what drove me to installation art is what I do full time as an event planner. Event planning and installation art are very similar, and in some cases they're kind of the same thing. But one has a lot more creative freedom.

Other than your current project at Good Coworking, what is your favorite project to date?

I'd say my magnet murals are up there. I've completed bigger, more challenging projects that you'd think on paper were my highlights, but these interactive murals are very personal to me. I came up with the concept on my own, and completing them helped me unlock a lot of new ideas.

If you could have your dream commission, what would it be?

I have a fantasy of doing some sort of large scale installation out in the far West Texas desert. There are some famous, random installations like the Prada store in Valentine, TX. I'd like to add something bizarre to the desert like that.
