Sales Lessons from a Girl Scout

Amy King, Good Coworking’s Co-Founder, and former Girl Scout, recently caught up with Onabella D., a young Girl Scout entrepreneur who is selling Girl Scout cookies for her sixth year. She shared what it’s like to sell during the Covid-19 era.

What is your favorite part about selling Girl Scout cookies?

My favorite part about selling cookies is getting to meet all the nice people while getting the experience in marketing/selling.

What have you learned to do differently this year for selling, because of COVID-19?

I have learned how to create and manage a website since I can’t see my customers face to face. I had to encourage my customers to use my digital cookie site versus my traditional face to face ask. I miss seeing my customers and their smiling faces but it’s more important that they are safe and healthy.

Tell us about your experience giving cookies to the COVID-19 patients.

There is a group of elderly patients in a senior care center near my house who have COVID and don’t get to see their family or friends. With the help of my Mimi and another friend, we donated Girl Scout cookies, and my sister and I made special cards to go with them. We put encouraging messages and drawings so it would cheer them up. It really is the thought that counts, and by thought...I mean I hope they know we are thinking about them. I hope it made them smile and reminded them that other people care about them and hope they get better soon!

What would your advice be to a girl just getting started in cookie sales?

Don’t eat all your cookies! But also be kind, know the cookies, and be patient with the customers. Also remember, ALWAYS ask because the worst thing they can do is say no.
